Are Microbiome-Friendly Hair Products Better?

Is there evidence to show that probiotic or microbiome friendly hair products are better than our normal hair care products?

While there is some limited research on the use of probiotic or microbiome-friendly hair products, the evidence is still somewhat mixed and limited. Here are a few examples of studies that have been conducted in this area:

  1. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science looked at the use of a probiotic shampoo and conditioner on scalp and hair health. The study found that the probiotic products led to increased hydration and reduced hair breakage, as well as a decrease in the number of dandruff flakes. However, it should be noted that this study was sponsored by the manufacturer of the probiotic hair products.

  2. Another study, published in the International Journal of Trichology in 2016, looked at the use of a prebiotic shampoo on the scalp microbiome. The study found that the prebiotic shampoo led to an increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria on the scalp, and a decrease in the abundance of harmful bacteria. However, it should be noted that this study was conducted in a small sample of just 10 subjects.

  3. A 2020 review article published in the International Journal of Trichology looked at the potential benefits of probiotic and prebiotic hair products. The authors noted that while there is some evidence to suggest that these products may be beneficial for scalp and hair health, more research is needed to fully understand their potential benefits and risks.

Overall, while there is some limited research to suggest that probiotic or microbiome-friendly hair products may be beneficial for scalp and hair health, more high-quality studies are needed to fully understand their potential benefits and risks. It is also important to note that some of the studies that have been conducted in this area have been sponsored by the manufacturers of these products, which may create a potential conflict of interest.

My feeling is that if you want to try out these products there is unlikely to be harm in doing so. And as consumers, we may be able to collectively provide feedback as to whether these products are actually beneficial in any way.

But, importantly, I don’t want us to forget that what is happening on the outside is usually a reflection of the inside.
